Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock - Image 1Aside from giving publisher Activision a big boost in sales and boosting the album sales of artists who contributed music for the game, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC) has apparently also affected digital sales of the music tracks included in the game.

According to a report on Ars Technica, bands such as The Strokes, Slipknot and Sonic Youth have seen sharp increases in download sales immediately after Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock hit U.S. store shelves.

The Strokes’ “Reptilia” reportedly sold 127 percent more digital copies on the week the game was released compared to the week before. Slipknot’s “Before I Forget” also saw a similar increase, jumping up 75 percent the week of the game’s release and 140 percent the week after.

“It doesn’t appear to matter if you’re in the main game or are a bonus song; huge gains are seen everywhere,” explained an Ars Technica a source close inside the music industry. “As long as your song ships with the game and you offer the track to be downloaded digitally, you see an increase.”

With numbers such as these, Activision may have greater power to pick and choose what tracks make it into future Guitar Hero games.
