Guitar heroes beware: here comes Guitar and Drum Villain

Guitar Hero - Image 1Ever since Guitar Hero‘s success, Harmonix Music Systems (the dev) and RedOctane (the publisher) has gone a long way. In other words, they got gobbled up like guppies in Feeding Frenzy. MTV bought Harmonix while Activision got RedOctane. The development of the Guitar Hero franchise was given to Neversoft, makers of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series.

We can assume that changes would be inevitable for the franchise. GameSpot sniffed around the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and found a couple of interesting patents. Activision apparently filed patents for “Guitar Villain” and “Drum Villain” with details that sound vaguely familiar. Games sold with electronic toy guitars? Very familiar indeed.

Whatever Activision has planned, they’re not telling us about it. Or atleast not yet. According to a representative, they are currently busy on Guitar Hero II‘s development for the Xbox360.

Anyway, we’ll have to wait for official announcements about this, since the patents don’t really confirm anything other that Activision had filed for patents. RedOctane, prior to being bought out, had filed for trademarks for Keyboard Hero, Drum Hero, and Band Hero. We haven’t seen the whole parade yet, have we?
