Halo 3 analyst bonanza: Microsoft ships 4.2 million copies

Halo 3 analyst bonanza: Microsoft ships 4.2 million copies - Image 1Big is big, and Microsoft can certainly dish it out. Or that’s the impression left on analysts Sarah Friar and Frederick Grieb both from Goldman Sachs, after attending a Microsoft company update earlier. According to them, Bungie StudiosHalo 3 may have accumulated 4.2 million copies (all editions consolidated) to ship to retailers by the end of September.

Though not as impressive as Halo 2‘s numbers, the 4.2 million count levels off at over a third of the Xbox 360’s worldwide install base and should reel in big bucks, both in hardware and software, for the army at Redmond. Friar and Grieb approximate a US$ 170 million hike in revenue due to Halo 3‘s launch, which should be reflected in the company’s Q3 reports.

And that’s without stating that the company’s third quarter ends just five days after Halo 3 launches. Both analysts, like others previously, believe that Halo 3 would push Microsoft to actually turn a profit for the first time since it launched the first Xbox. They also believe that the launch would signal a start for Microsoft’s momentum to success, which could be further augmented with exclusive Grand Theft Auto IV content coming next year.
