Hands-on Tank Beat at TGS 2006

TGS 2006: DS

Our impression of IGN’s TGS 2006 hands-on preview of Tank Beat for the DS is… Battle City on 3D with a stylus. Battle City was fun. This writer repeatedly shoots his brother/supposed teammate to paralyze him and leave him at the mercy of the approaching enemy (Yeah, but that’s because he did that to me first!). With reported Wi-Fi online and ad-hoc multiplayer available for this game, it will be nice to relive those insanely suicidal tank battles once again. Good times.

Back to the preview. The stylus controls the tank this time. The player draws the path he wants the tank to take on the game map in the touchscreen. Holding down and dragging the stylus tip across the map controls the camera. And tapping on enemy blips on the map orders the tank to attack said enemy. It’s a control scheme that should be familiar to any RTS player.

The demo level was a “Protect Something Valuable” mission a la Battle City. Graphics aren’t exactly the bizomb, being rather blocky, flat, and all-around uninspiring to the IGN people (probably explains why they haven’t a screenshot of this game in action). We dunno… we were able to locate a YouTube gameplay video trailer of Tank Beat, loaded back in August, and it’s pretty much par for the course at most. Looks kinda addictive, too – especially if you’re George S. Patton.

Tank Beat will crush all opposition – er, roll into Japanese stores end of November. No planned US release, though. Patton’s frothing with protests.
