Harrison comments on PS3’s 165k sales in UK

Sony Studio boss Phil Harrison considers the PlayStation 3 (PS3) launch in the UK the biggest product launch ever seen in the region, in light of reports that the PS3 exceeded the 165,000 sales mark.

Speaking on a recent Game Theory Podcast, Harrison stated that PS3 hardware, software, and related peripheral sales amounted to a total of £ 100 million (US$ 197 million). “This not only makes it the most successful games hardware launch, we think it is the most successful consumer launch of a product in the UK,” Harrison said. He further added,

We have been in the office scratching our heads trying to think of a consumer product that has achieved that level of consumer sales in such a short period of time. If anyone can think of a UK product launch that has raised this amount of business in such a short period of time IÂ’d love to know because we canÂ’t think of one.

Harrison as lo said that he expected strong sales to continue within the week, with retailers in Europe already reporting that they were running out of PS3 stocks.

It was always our strategy to have a good supply. ThereÂ’s never been a launch of a console in Europe thatÂ’s had a million pieces of hardware sold in or available. WeÂ’ve kept some back in order to continue to supply the market. ItÂ’s been a tremendous success and something that we are very pleased about.

Aside from the UK sales, the PS3 is reported to have already achieved over 600,000 sales in the rest of Europe.
