HD DVD camp: consoles are mostly used for games, not movies

Blu-ray vs. HD DVD - Image 1Perhaps the format war isn’t all it’s cracked up to be: according to a spokesman for the HD DVD Promotion group, independent research has found that only 13% of PS3 owners use their consoles as a movie player while less than 10% of Xbox 360 owners have bought an HD DVD player for their consoles.

The same spokesperson expressed: “That’s why we don’t see on the PlayStation 3 side why gamers would behave differently than on the Microsoft side.” Read the full article for more details.

Blu-ray vs HD DVD - Image 1Perhaps the format war isn’t all it’s cracked up to be: according to Olivier Van Wynendaele, a spokesman for the HD DVD Promotion group, independent research has found that most PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 owners don’t use their consoles as movie players.

According to the research, 60% of PlayStation 3 owners don’t know that their machines can play movies. Of the remaining 40% that are aware, only 13% use their consoles as a movie player. On the Xbox 360 camp however, less than 10% of gamers have bought an HD DVD player for their consoles.

The data isn’t all that surprising, when most console owners don’t even know what HD graphics are all about (in both camps). The same research that discovered this also found that 60% of PS3 owners don’t even know what Blu-ray is. Most gamers don’t even know what their consoles can really do.

However, as much as the console wars affect only a small part of the gaming industry, it doesn’t mean that there’s no point to the war. Fast forward a couple of years and this convergence of technologies may be the foundation of all other media tech, and the winner of this war may benefit the most from it.

In the short run though, perhaps the publicity of such a fierce competition won’t really help as much with console sales. The same spokesperson expressed: “That’s why we don’t see on the PlayStation 3 side why gamers would behave differently than on the Microsoft side.”
