Hideo Kojima talks Metal Gear Anniversary, MGS4 on E3

You know who this is - Image 1One of the biggest names in video game history known for his ingenious ideas that had gamers on their toes, embraced by hundred thousands of fans; there’s nobody quite like Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear fame. He sat down for an interview with Famitsu as the legendary game director, writer, and designer celebrates the 20th anniversary of the series that popularized the stealth action genre as we know it.

As if the memories of a couple of decades ago were still fresh, Kojima reminisced:

The company told me to make a war-themed game for the MSX2. At that time, Capcom‘s Commando was really popular in the arcades. Although to be honest, I did not want to make a war-themed game. So I came up with a game concept like the movie “The Great Escape” where players would try to escape from prison without using any weapons.

His ambitious concept wasn’t embraced well by the company, almost causing Kojima to quit. Fortunately, a co-worker heard his ideas out and it clicked for both of them. Kojima told Famitsu:

One day, my older co-worker asked me ‘what type of game do you want to make?’ I insisted on “The Great Escape” game. So he told me to write up a concept proposal, and when he read it, he told me he has not seen this type of game before. He negotiated with our boss and finally the project was given the go signal. He was really a great guy, actually he was the man behind Gradius.

As we all know, that fresh game that spurred from the mind of a single person went on to become one of the most successful game franchises in the world of gaming. Kojima Productions is already celebrating Metal Gear‘s 20th Anniversary, party coming up on July 24 in Japan, and the release of Metal Gear Solid Collection is right around the corner.

What about Metal Gear Solid 4, you say? Surely, you didn’t think we won’t be seeing this much anticipated title on E3. Even if you did, it’s time to cast away those negative thoughts – we will get a demo of MGS4 using actual PS3 hardware. While we do not know if it’ll be playable, we’re still very excited. Rest assured we’ll keep you guys posted when it finally comes around
