Hirai on product shortage and competition
Kazuo Hirai was recently promoted to man the President and Group COO post for SCEI. As with any responsible leader, he didn’t waste time in reassuring his staff, and the people who support his organization that everything’s right where they want them to be.
In a recent interview, Hirai admitted that while Sony is trying to meet demands as soon as possible, they would likely stick to their current strategy and the number of PS3 units available for the consumers will likely remain scarce for a while. He explained,
I think we are going to be selling out of the product very quickly. Hopefully we’ll replenish it very quickly as well with the weekly shipments. But ultimately, when we have a situation that the consumer can walk into retail and pick one up remains to be seen, basically.
He then shared that normally, their products are delivered via ships but to help shorten the waiting period, Sony is now chartering planes to fly the products in. Of course, that would mean more expenses for the company and that is why the North American market won’t be getting any price cuts soon.
Furthermore, Hirai shared his thoughts regarding his company and competition. It would be remembered not too long ago, Sony declared that they don’t want to compete anymore with the other companies, pertaining to Microsoft and Nintendo. Hirai, in the interview further supported this stand as he said:
When we introduce a product, we introduce a product that’s going to be relevant for a very long time, we don’t suddenly leave the other, older console twisting in the wind, which seems to be a strategy some of the older companies go through. We have many more years to go with the PS2, we’re not suddenly dropping support for that platform.
He ended the interview with a promise that Sony is currently working on firmware updates to improve PS3’s compatibility with titles from previous PS generations.
