When Konami revealed their financials back in February, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was still pretty much in the game, despite the age on ol’ Snake’s face. Snake Eater, released for the PS2, was quite the hot-seller back in the day, and to this day remains tough to beat.
Released in Japan back in April 28th, let’s look at how Peace Walker and the more recent MGS games performed in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Let’s look at the Week 1 performances:
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater – 548,186
- Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops – 178,370
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots – 464,926
- Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker – 434,366
Snake Eater, with the large install base of the PS2, towers over the other three. You have to give it to MGS4, though, because it still sold a strong amount despite the smaller PS3 install base during that time. Peace Walker finds itself slightly behind MGS4, possibly due to Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 sales for the Nintendo DS, which forced Naked Snake to debut at #2 in the Media Create charts.
Let’s move on to the Week 2 stats:
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater – 110,438
- Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops – 51,951
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots – 67,795
- Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker – 140,591
This is where Peace Walker outshines its older brothers, and by a pretty good margin, too.
Adding both weeks up, we have:
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater – 658,624
- Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops – 230,321
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots – 532,721
- Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker – 574,957
So for the first two weeks in the market, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker doesn’t quite outsell Snake Eater, but it did enough to edge Guns by a small margin.
