How pirate heads are created for Pirates of the Burning Sea

A pirate head in PotBS - Image 1 Have you ever wondered how faces in games are created? Here’s a cool developer log entry from the people behind Flying Lab Software‘s Pirates of the Burning Sea that talks about exactly that.

This behind-the-scenes look at how faces are created for the game is pretty interesting. According to the poster, BSharp, things start out with a lightmap. Tinting, coloring and finally the teeth and eyes are then added to the model until the final product – a cool-looking pirate head – is realized.

Along with the step-by-step process of creating an ugly mug, BSharp also revealed that more “piratical looking pirates” are being added to Pirates of the Burning Sea. Says BSharp, “players will now be able to select from a wider range of broken-nosed, lazy-eyed, lovable rogues”. More heads will also be added to the game even after launch.
