Apple and Google announced a new tool that allows users to import photos directly from Google Photos into iCloud Photos for Apple platforms. Here’s how you can use it. The collaboration is part the non-profit Data Transfer Initiative and its predecessor, the Data Transfer Project. Apple, Google and Meta have worked together to create both. Google had announced a tool for transferring Google Photos to iCloud by 2021. The new Google tools allow for a closer collaboration between both companies to make transfers easier. It’s not only for photos. Video can be included in the transfer. The photo transfers to Apple iCloud are subject to a few restrictions. They do not work with managed Apple Accounts or if Advanced Data Protection has been enabled. Transfer Specifics To use the Photos to iCloud transfer, both iCloud Drive and iCloud Photo must be enabled in your device’s Settings App. Ensure that your iCloud Drive has enough space to accept the photos you want to transfer. Apple claims that transfers between the two services work seamlessly and do not require manual downloading of photos. After copies are transferred to iCloud, any photos transferred from Google Photos will remain there. Apple notes that the transfer may take several hours or days if the photos are large. Click Continue to continue and follow the instructions.
Select “Apple iCloud Photos” for the destination.
