id Software rocks the Emmys with Quake and Doom
Quake“>id Software just proved that even companies with rather strange names can strike gold at the Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards. In fact, it struck gold twice in a single category: Development of 3D Software Engines.
The company won for its Quake technology, which introduced true 3D realtime rendering back in 1996. Eventually, the technology gave rise to several versions of the engine under the terms of the GPL license. Some games using the Quake engine includes:
- Quake
- HeXen II
- Half-Life
- Laser Arena
- CIA Operative: Solo Missions
- Urban Mercenary
The other statuette went to id Software co-founder John Carmack for developing Quake and Doom engines. John Carmack is credited for creating the most in-demand and technically sophisticated 3D graphics engines in existence. He is currently working on a third killer tech called MegaTexture. Megatexture will be seen in the company’s upcoming Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars. With his ability to attract Emmy gold, Carmack ought to make room for more trophies.
