This homebrew application might be in its initial stages, but you can’t deny that the direction the app wants the Wii to go in is certainly a good one. Christophe Thibault is attempting to port MPlayer to the Wii, calling it MPlayerWii v0.01 in the process.
Here’s a list of the formats MPlayerWii v0.01 currently supports:
- Containers: AVI, WMV, MKV, MP3, FLV (Flash Video), MP4, M4V
- Video codecs: Xvid, DivX, Windows Media, MPEG 1/2
- Audio codecs: MPEG 1/2/3, Windows Media
Thibault might have released a working app, but it’s currently not problem-free. As he writes of the initial release, he notes that the app has the following characteristics at present: “Full of bugs, audio sync code is awful and will probably crash often. Also, there’s room for lots of speed improvements.”
That being said, it’s still an admirable bit of coding that people might want to help beta test. Feel free to download the app below and send the developer some feedback by visiting the source link.
