Iran: Sanctions? What sanctions? We fly off to space with our own satellite rocket

Satellite Rocket - Image 1Never mind that Iran is under sanctions from the international government organizations. Despite this crippling embargo because of their suspected nuclear technology activity, Iran still managed to launch their very own home-built satellite rocket on Sunday. Welcome to space, folks.

Iran's THe Safir - Image 1Last Sunday, the government of Iran has revealed that they have successfully launched a home-built satellite rocket into space. Head of Iran’s space agency, Reza Taghipour, told state television that The Safir (Ambassador) has all its systems made in Iran, and that they had a test satellite put into orbit.

While the Iranian government lauds this as a clear success, this puts Western governments in an even more cautious state, given that Iran is being suspected of developing its own nuclear technology. With an Iranian satellite launched into space, it is now the concern that Iran will utilize its space program to military use.

The Fars news agency said:

The achievement has drawn much attention from around the world, especially from among Muslim nations, as Iran is under heavy sanctions by the West and the UN Security Council, making it develop the technology and build every part and equipment needed in the field of aerospace.

Apparently, the Sunday launch commenced just in time for the anniversary of the birth of the eight century Imam Mahdi. The Imam vanished as a boy, and the Shiites believe that he will one day return as the messiah.

The state television covered the launch and broadcasted footage of the rocket launching from the station in the remote desert of western Iran. Graphics were also shown of the satellite separating itself from the rocket.

Scientific development is one of the main themes of the incumbent president’s, Ahmadinejad, term.
