Is MGS: Portable Ops the testing ground for MGS4?

That's Naked Snake, by the way.Could Hideo Kojima‘s Metal Gear Solid title for Sony‘s PSP be the testing ground for what we should expect in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots? Some people definitely think so.

The folks over at High Dynamic Range Lying have offered up a unique premise to Metal Gear fans, with the opinion that there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing both gameplay and story elements of MGS: Portable Ops recurring in this, the supposedly final Metal Gear Solid game on the PS3.

Their contention, which kind of makes sense given Kojima-san’s penchant for placing otherwise unwieldy themes into videogames, is as follows:

The connection to MGS4 lies in the story of Solid Snake and Big Boss. Much of the thematic influence in Metal Gear lies in the parallels between Solid Snake, and his genetic father, Big Boss. Shortly after MGS3, we discover that Big Boss becomes disillusioned with the US military and government, choosing to disappear rather that continue his military service, much the way Solid Snake felt after the original Metal Gear. Continuing the parallel with his son, Big Boss is pushed back into service to stop the elite commando team that made him famous.

Since Solid Snake ends up being pretty old in this last installment of the series, it stands to reason that, as in Konami‘s Portable Ops, he might try and recruit comrades to help him out with this new mission. Of course, we really know less than we’d like, and leave it Kojima to surprise us all at the last minute, right? He hasn’t done a “history repeats itself” angle quite so completely yet, so we’re betting on that element to be present in the one. What do you think?
