Is Sony finally extending its arms to homebrew scene?

DennyWhile Nintendo is having a change of heart regarding online features, Sony is feeling the same about customization. Such is the message SCE Worldwide Studio Europe VP Michael Denny carries when he took the stage at the on-going London Games Summit. While, the executive spoke in general terms, people were kind of thinking (or hoping) that he is referring to the emerging homebrew scene.

According to Denny, developers must realize that next-gen games’ success will depend largely on giving players the ability to personalise, customise, and download extra game content. “Today’s gamer wants to customise their games to fit their own personality and style and [wants] games to be more interactive than ever before,” he says.

HomebrewMore than the fascination with skins and expansion episodes, the Sony official claims gamers’ love to contribute and to show off. In a rather unexpected statement, Denny then declares, “Imagine not just personalizing the look of the game, but personalizing the content in such a way that makes the gameplay more relevant to a particular player or group of players.”

He then acknowledges the fact that many gamers have the tools and the desire to become amateur producers. As of now, Sony has been conservative when it comes to homebrew developments. So conservative in fact, it tries and tries to upgrade the PSP to prevent tinkering with its software.

Has Sony finally realized they can’t hold back the emerging community of developers? We’ll be able to tell as Sony conducts discussion on its policies in the future.
