It’s official: Wii to have game-specific friends lists

Wii console - Image 1Nintendo has just sent a confirmation that the Wii’s online gaming capability will have no unified friends list. Unlike the setup that is used in the Xbox 360’s Live community where your friends list remains constant whichever game that you play, the Wii will instead be making use of game-specific friends lists. This confirmation was picked up by Nima over at Wii Network site via an email. The email sent by R.M. Rickets of Nintendo of America reads:

I can confirm that the Friend Code system in the Wi-Fi Connection (WFC) service for Wii will be the same as it was for the Nintendo DS, meaning game-specific Friend Codes and a separate Friend Roster are used in each game where players can play with identified friends. As with Nintendo DS, the system was created to ensure the gaming environment is kept fun for everyone.

It will be remembered that a few days ago, a similar inquiry had been made with GameSpy regarding the Wii’s online gaming capability. GameSpy announced that while it will be supplying its online systems for the Wii’s use, the console’s multiplayer features will be title-specific.
