Iwata on the Wii’s success

Iwata - Image 1IGN reports that Japan‘s Yukan Fuji blog was recently able to get an interview with Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata. What’s newsworthy here is that the exec shows tremendous class while at the same time showing that Nintendo is still in “underdog” mode. When asked about the Wii being a success, the Nintendo president had this to say:

Any system will sell well following launch, …but there will definitely come a time where it will stop selling. Even the DS hit a rough spell after selling 1.5 million units a month after launch. The flame was really lit a year after launch, after Nintendogs and Brain Age became big hits. With the Wii, we have to make good software just as we did with the DS.

Moreover, IGN reports that when the Yukan Fuji implied that Nintendo was the industry leader at the moment and its competitors are chasing from behind, Iwata had this to say:

That’s not the case, …So long as we continue the fight against the lack of interest in games from the general consumer, Nintendo will always be the challenger.

Yep. They’re goal right now is to convince us to keep swinging our Wiimotes. After the relatively poor performance of their last two consoles, it’s good to see that Nintendo is cautiously optimistic. It’s also great to know that Iwata himself knows that in order for the Wii to not end up a “novelty” as its detractors would like to say every so often, Nintendo needs to deliver the software.

We guess it helps that the guy plays the stuff they make. Iwata’s current obsession is the Japan-only DS cooking game, Cooking Navi.
