Iwata Says Wii Will Sell Twice to Thrice as Well as the GameCube

I must have missed this during my scramble to provide updates on all the new games during E3, so I’m sorry for the late post! Anyway, Iwata says that in regards to Wii, hardware sales of “two to three times that of GameCube is a possibility.” The GameCube sold just over 20 million units worldwide. This would mean that Iwata believes the Wii could sell 40 or even 60 million Wii units. The GameCube’s closest competitor, the Xbox, sold just under 24 million units worldwide. The PS2, the leader last gen, sold around 100 million worldwide. Those numbers should put things in perspective. Nintendo has sold less and less units every generation since the NES. However, the targeting of non-gamers should help fix that. The DS is already the fastest-selling system in Japan!
