Japan hardware sales: PSP still going strong
The PSP’s been going strong in Japan, selling nearly as much as all the other platforms combined for two weeks straight. While sales seem to have slowed down this week, the Sony handheld is still going strong. Follow the “read more” link for more details.
Thanks to the massive success of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G in Japan, hardware sales for the PSP has been skyrocketing. For two weeks, it has managed to maintain leadership in the charts, selling nearly as much as all the other platforms combined.
This week, however, PSP sales seems to have slowed down. While it still sold more than all the other platforms, its numbers are nowhere near the previous week’s when it sold near 121,000 units. This week it only sold 85,721 units.
It must also be noted that Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G has dropped to second place in the software charts in Japan. The PSP title was ousted by Mario Kart Wii, which sold over half a million copies. Pretty good for its debut week.
The Wii didn’t get a sales boost from the success of the game, although with so many successful Wii games in the past, the market’s already pretty saturated with the console now. Here the numbers for the week ending on April 13:
- PSP: 85,721
- DS Lite: 47,158
- Wii: 46,296
- PS3: 8,232
- PS2: 6,834
- Xbox 360: 1,147
