Japanese Art Meets RTS Nostalgia: Starcraft Origami

Given the place Starcraft has in South Korea, perhaps it’s no surprise then that this South Korean decided to… um, “fold his own zerg rush.” “Star khu” (as BabelFish translates his user name) merges the traditional Japanese art of origami with the traditional Blizzard RTS to produce a menagerie of Starcraft units out of sheets of art paper. You name it, he’s probably folded it: Carriers, battlecruisers, guardians, mutalisks, hydralisks, siege tanks, ultralisks, dragoons, Templars, Vultures, Reavers… honestly, we’ve lost track just looking at these pictures. Must be the wave of nostalgia that hit us.

If that wave of nostalgia has hit you as well, check out the full gallery at the full article!

An entire generation of gamers – this writer included – grew up with Starcraft. We’d spend our lazy summers flooding the gates of our enemy’s base with zergling rush after zergling rush, drop in a platoon of siege tanks behind enemy lines, and (this writer’s personal favorite) dominate the endgame with “black-sky” Protoss Carrier warfare. The Starcraft universe holds a special place in our hearts, even after Warcraft III and WoW came afterwards.

The Starcraft universe holds an even more special place in the heart of South Koreans, who have embraced the RTS as a sort of national pastime. The game is the centerpiece of that country’s professional gaming circuit, the players are national celebrities earning six-figure salaries (in US dollars!), and there are three television channels dedicated to broadcasting PvP matches.

Star khu, if you’re reading this right now, from one Starcraft player to another, this body of work is maximum ownage! We only have one wish, though, on behalf of Starcraft enthusiasts everywhere: could you provide us with an instruction manual or a folding guide? (We’d definitely have it, if you’re interested.)
