John Koller: motion control, 3D gaming, PSN for Sony in 2010
Sony has always been proactive in the innovations department, and based from an interview with John Koller, that’s not going to change in 2010. In fact, the focal points of the year ahead don’t even include conventional gaming. Talking about PSN and hints of paid subscriptions, the hardware marketing director didn’t answer directly. “It’s becoming a bigger focal point of our business overall,” he said. “We’ll add a number of very critically demanded features, and also continue to look for ways to expand on what the PS3 consumer has asked for.”
For motion control and Gem/Sphere, they’re still looking into the best type of game for he technology, but the seamless toolset will be directed towards “family games, as well as shooters and sports games,” he said. “Those are going to be the areas that will really define success, because they’re areas that quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching, from a differentiation standpoint.”
As for 3D gaming, Koller didn’t go into detail. He did note that, as announced, further additions to the PlayStation 3 will all come via firmware update “for the forseeable future” adding that, “There’s a lot features and functions we have planned there.”
