Killzone 2 pre-order exclusive demo explained, PSN free-for-all demo dated

Some of you may be asking, why in Helghast’s name did Sony choose to make the Killzone 2 demo a pre-order exclusive before release? Some might argue that the point of the demo is to help the buyer decide if he or she wants to get the game. And now? You have to get the game first (or at least, pre-order it), and only then you’d gain access to the demo. Why oh why is this so? Well, here’s your answer! And on top of that, we now also have confirmation of when the PSN demo goes live!

This comes from SCEA product marketing VP Scott Steinberg, so if there’s anyone who can explain why they decided to use this tactic for K2, it’s him.

Offering a playable demo to motivate preorders speaks to our confidence in the appeal of a game such as Killzone 2. We take this approach when we are convinced that the experience will cement a consumerÂ’s interest in purchasing. Retailers will then merchandise those demos within their stores and online to maximize their visibility. Through this process, consumers are often times able to reserve their copy of the final game, which provides an incentive to purchase and helps seal the deal. We also offer demos on the PSN, which we have done in the past with great success, and will continue to make that available. Killzone 2, for example, will have a downloadable demo launch in North America the week that the game is launching, for consumers who prefer that option.

Well, I’m not sure if that’s good enough for most of you, but we’ll take it nonetheless. Here’s some good news though. If you thought that the only way to get the demo before the game gets released is via pre-order, worry not. Turns out that they will release the demo over PSN a day before the game hits retail.
