Hideo Kojima, speaking to Hyper PlayStation magazine, has revealed new details regarding Metal Gear Solid 4, which should tide fans over for at least a few weeks. First of all, the game does not actually take place that far in the future – Solid Snake, being a clone of Big Boss (hence the resemblance), ages quicker than most humans. Metal Gear’s token geezer, Revolver Ocelot, will return for the game, so expect him and Snake to partake in some nasty, over-the-hill fighting (wheelchair wars?).

Mr. Kojima further elaborates on one of the catchphrases from the impressive MGS4 trailer, “no place to hide.” Since the game will take place during a war, sometimes Snake will be caught between two or more opposing sides that have no affiliation whatsoever with Snake. The two armies will battle, destroying buildings and other perfectly good hiding spots along the way. Snake, for his part, could actually infiltrate one of the sides by winning their respect through killing off their enemies.

Kojima also expressed interest in implementing more psychological warfare into the game, such as by making a few noises to surprise the guards, scare them a bit, and thus making them less efficient at trying to kill you. This last feature, Kojima concedes, may not be implemented to the extent he wishes, but that he will try his best. Let’s hope so, because this game is sounding like a marvelous re-invention of the Metal Gear series – this is not your grandfather’s MGS.
