Kreon firmware for Samsung DH-162C drive updated

Samsung DVD driveFor those who’ve modded their 360s and are looking to make backups of their game discs, there are few things better than the Kreon firmware for PC Samsung SH-D162C DVD drives. While it is possible to make backups using the 360’s DVD Drive itself, it’s a horrendously complicated and dangerous process. We don’t want to open up our 360 every time we want to make a backup of a game we legally own.

And there’s only a few PC drives which can “dump” the Xbox 360 game discs. And yes, the Samsung SH-D162C is one of them. Being cheap and popular in the market, it’s a much better route for those who still make backups themselves. So why are we talking about all of that here? Well, kreon has just updated his modified firmware for the Samsung SH-D162C drive. Here’s what he had to say:

“The time has come for a small update. A few bugs/problems was identified in the V0.80 release, so a lot of effort has gone into testing V0.81 in order to provide a more stable and reliable experience.”

Here’s what’s in the latest update:

  • Fixed: Wrong disc size was reported following a SS extraction when in ‘lock’ mode.
  • Fixed: SS extraction for XBOX game discs didn’t work as expected, causing incorrect data in response table.
  • Fixed: A few other minor fixes to improve overall performance an reliability.
  • Added: The speed of the drive is set to 6x prior to extracting SS data just like the TS-H943 does 5x.
  • Added: A sense error 03/11/00 (Media Error – Read Error) will now be reported, if an unrecoverable read error occurs during SS extraction.

The one thing missing from this update is the hardware correct timing feature for response types 5 and 7. Though, looking at the frequent updates, we’d guess that it would be solved within the coming weeks. Anyways, we can’t help you with finding the file since it’s not very legal. But if you know the right places, it’ll be easy to find it; heck, it took me the better part of only five seconds to find it.
