Kutaragi Hints at PS3 External Power Supply

PS3Ken Kutaragi in an interview with Japanese site PC Impress Watch hints at the possibility of the PS3 having an external power supply like the Xbox 360’s power brick.

Here he talks about how the cost of mass producing Sony‘s next-gen consoles can be lowered. One factor they’re working on is the reduction in size of the Cell chip by adopting a 65-nanometer processor. To keep power consumption as low as possible, the Cell processor will have to use Tranmeta’s LongRun power-management technology.

Kutaragi also talked about ways to cool the Cell processor which include heat and electromagnetic interference management using heat pipes and custom cooling solutions. We would have expected the most typical liquid cooling system to be placed inside of the PS3, but Kutaragi offers a more interesting solution – he said that “the power supply could almost be sold separately.”

Is this his hint at the PS3’s own version of the power brick?
