Linden Lab to open-source server code

At the beginning of the year, Second Life developer Linden Lab announced that it would be releasing the client software for its popular MMORPG under an open-source license. Recently we learned that the company is also planning to go all the way.

ZDNet’s Steve O’Hear writes that Linden Lab will soon be opening up the server code for Second Life. “This is big news,” writes O’Hear, “as it furthers Second Life‘s ambitions to be a fully distributed 3D network — built on interoperability and not owned by one company — a bit like the Internet itself.”

Speculation comes in when talk of how Linden Lab plans to keep making money in Second Life starts. Right now, the company generates income through selling virtual real estate in Second Life. Some of the directions that Linden could go according to O’Hear’s fellow ZDNet blogger Dana Blankenhorn include custom programming for Second Life extensions and support contracts for open source users.
