Look, Mario! No Condom!

Researchers for the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, a scientific journal, claim that television watching and video gaming “should be viewed as a major public health issue.” They have made claims including one that states that “playing a violent… video game makes children more accepting of… having sex without a condom.”

This is not a joke. The journal states that video gaming will convince children not to use condoms. They did not stop there, either. The journal even poked fun at fat toddlers saying that “toddlers who watch more than two hours of television a day are more likely to be overweight at ages 3 and 4-and-a-half.” If we rephrase that, it says that kids who watch Barney will become the nation’s next public transportation seat hoggers.

Watching two or more hours of television a day will also “make it significantly more likely a teen will have sex within a year.” If they also play violent games while watching television, they won’t use condoms.

It seems to me that the ‘Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine’ is playing the blame game and pointing fingers at the media. Possibly lack of parental involvement might have something to do with fat toddlers and teenage sex? Of course not. It’s Nintendo and the Disney Channel’s doings!

Left picture: A future condom/video game package deal?
