Lord of The Rings Online: Beware the Dead Spire

Dead SpireAs you go forth from the Old Forest toward the Misty Mountains, beware the Dead Spire – for it means you have crossed into the Barrow-downs. Frodo, Samwise, Meriadoc and Pippin nearly met their demise here when they were overcome by the Spells of the Barrow-Wights, who would surely have sacrificed them to the Evil One – had not Tom Bombadil popped in and kicked some Barrow-Wight a–.

The Dead Spire is one of many familiar landmarks players will encounter in Turbine‘s upcoming MMORPG, Lord of The Rings Online:Shadows of Angmar. Although few but hard-core Tolkien fans would know it, the Barrow-Downs were originally raised by the Edain – men of Numenor who established the northern kingdom of Arnor and later tended by their descendants, the Dúnedain of Cardolan. When Sauron sent a plague across Middle-Earth, the last of the Men of Cardolan perished. It was after this that the Witch-King of Angmar sent forth his spirit-minions to profane the dead who rested there – thus making the Barrow-Downs the place of horror it has become.

When players see the Dead Spire, they’ll know that the Barrow of the last Prince of Cardolan – where the Ring Quest nearly ended before it began – is not far away.
