LOTRO Alpha: Looking Good, Say Testers

Lord of the Rings Online - Alpha Impressions!

With the release of their Alpha 2 phase, Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar is getting its battery of tests through player interaction. So far, as the site has noted, things are looking pretty good on both sides.

With a large number of Alpha players now signing on at the same time, the Alpha version is giving its developers good experience at seeing how their current setup for the game plays out with players. Gamers seemed more than a bit surprised with how stable the gameworld is proving this early in the testing phase. One gamer exclaimed his amazement at playing an alpha for three hours without a single crash, which are fine words indeed since even betas crash before release. They enjoyed the scenery, which seems to be quite robust, if our screenshots are anything to draw conclusions upon.

Some of the testers also liked how the writing was done, though it’s a shame we can’t get a hand on the script. As one person commented, “Writing is excellent so far, as are the characterizations. The model options are fantastic – giving you a very *real* seeming and very individual character.”

The only thing that managed to irk some players was a scarcity of enemies, specifically a lack of wolves in the starting zone. A minor quirk for an Alpha, and it’s only going to get better with time, patience, and more coding.

If any of you folks have actually played in the Alpha, let us know what you think of it.
