Lucent Goes After Xbox 360 Over Patent Infringement (Again)
Lucent cried “patent infringement” over Microsoft’s use of a specific video decoding technique in the Xbox 360 console, According to Lucent, they hold the patent for the MPEG2 decoder used by the Xbox 360 for some of its video functionality since 1993. Although the two have clashed over the same issue over a year ago (judge ruled in Microsoft’s favour) but that summary judgement was handed down because of a typo in the patent (and they were out of White Out). And so Lucent was free to file a further case against Microsoft in future. Which is now. With the patent typo corrected, Lucent and is back for another round in court. Lucent is demanding that MS withdraws Xbox 360 from the market. Which is the polite way of saying “We want cash payout.”
