Since it was revealed a couple of months back that it is in production, we haven’t really heard anything about it until now. So if you’re into this game, then sit and read up.
There are three modes to this game, each promising a unique experience: Ancient Tales, Motion Mode, and a level editor. In Ancient Tales Mode, to reveal a piece of an old Chinese story, you would have to finish a layout by matching the one pair of golden tiles on the board. As each piece is only as good as your last, that means you’ll have to unlock all in order for you to find out the story, one piece at a time, literally.
Out of all the hundreds of Chinese tales out there (some of which aren’t even “wholesome” enough for ESRB), five were chosen to be included in this game: “The Fox”, “Tiger Shoes”, “The Magic Paintbrush”, “The Man Who Moved Mountains”, and “Li Chi”.
Now, the Motion Mode is actually “action Mahjong”, complete with all those power-ups and crazy-fast mechanics, while the level editor is still being planned for building and sharing levels via PSN. Hmmm.. am getting an LBP vibe there — which is a good vibe, anyway.
So in the meantime, check out the vid trailer and the screenshots they so generously shared with us. The artworks are looking real nice, too, keeping in touch with the whole genuine Chinese feel. Mahjong Tales: Ancient Wisdom is landing on the PSN on early January of 2009 for US$ 9.99. Enjoy.
