Thankfully, Major Nelson posted a solution for the problem. Simply sign in with the Windows Live ID associated with the problematic gamer tag. After that update your contact information on billing.microsoft.com, Xbox .com, or from your Xbox 360.

The fix seems to work just fine so you might want to do this with your problematic accounts. In the odd case that it doesn’t work, you probably should call up tech support and ask for their assistance.
