Mario Kart 64: No-go for ghost save fix

Mario Kart 64 - Image 1This news bit goes out to the guys who are enjoying their copy of Mario Kart 64 from Nintendo’s Virtual Console shop. Some of you may have noticed that aside from other spotted game bugs, there’s the matter of the game’s refusal to let you save your time trial ghost data.

For those who can recall, the ghost  feature allowed you to save your best game times as a ghost which you could challenge in future races. Unfortunately, it seems that the game has problems in the port’s memory pack emulation, which in turn makes this feature unusable.  The Game Pro dudes – the guys who noticed the problem – contacted Nintendo on how it could be resolved, and got this reply:

“Due to unavoidable technical reasons unfortunately it is not possible to save ghost data from Mario Kart 64‘s Time Trials in the Virtual Console version of the game,”

There you have it – we’ll just have to bear with one less game feature for one of the N64‘s more memorable classics, though Nintendo did say they would send out advisories over the Wii channel and VC for the next gamer out to buy this title among the other oldies they may fancy in VC.
