Mark Rein: UT3 still coming to Xbox 360, talks about PC demo

There’s been much hub-bub about Unreal Tournament 3 Windows (Xbox 360, PS3, PC) lately, mostly about its Sony PlayStation 3 and Windows PC versions, but not much about its upcoming Xbox 360 incarnation. This news update may change all that, with Mark Rein correcting a slight miscommunication that started with Epic Games‘ President Mike Caps about the game only being on the Sony PS3.

So what’s the final word from Mark Rein? He confirms that Epic Games is still on schedule to deliver Unreal Tournament 3 to the Xbox 360 next year. There you go, there wasn’t any need to panic after all – Xbox 360 owners will still be able to experience the third iteration of Unreal Tournament in its fullest glory come the game’s release date. Whew!

With that business aside, Mark Rein also explained why the demo for the PC looks and plays the way it does. His statement, verbatim:

The reason we put out a beta version of our demo was to get feedback on how well the game runs on older hardware.

In addition it should also be noted that we purposely left out some of the higher detail content in the beta demo levels to keep the download size reasonable and because, as you implied, it is generally already known the game runs well on high-end hardware and we didn’t think an over-2Gb beta would get downloaded and tested as much as we’d like to see.

Well, that certainly sounds reasonable. After all, a demo is a preview of things to come and not the final build, add to that downloading two gigabytes is sure to put the stress test on any connection. Here’s hoping for a goodly-sized update – one that lets us behold Unreal Tournament 3 with next-gen glasses (or something close to it).
