Merrill Lynch: A third of Japanese/US homes to have Wiis by 2011
We don’t know about you, but basing from our earlier reports, it seems that Merrill Lynch tends to be a flip-flopper when they are talking about next-gen consoles. First, they said that the PS3 is gonna be a financial disaster for Sony; then they shift gears and said that the PS3 and Xbox 360 will win, but the Wii will fail. What gives?
Now, Yoshiyuki Kinoshita a Merrill Lynch analyst, predicts that by the year 2011, a third of all Japanese households and almost 30% of all US homes will own a Wii.
This is so because the Xbox 360 has struggled to make its presence felt in Japan. It was mentioned in an Enterbrain research that Nintendo took 68% market share in Japan, with the PS3 taking 25% and the Xbox 360 with 7%. As for the U.S., the recent NPD finding shows that the Wii is leading the sales with 436,000 sold units.
Some analysts believe that even if the console war is still in its infancy, the position established by the Wii could ensure its supremacy for several years. On the other hand, there are other analysts who believe that the initial appeal of the Wii would quickly wear off, and in the long run, computing power would be the key to win the console war.
With that, we actually do not have an idea where Merrill Lynch stands. To recap, they first said that the PS3 will fail, then they said the Wii will fail, now they are saying that the Wii would be a staple in Japanese and U.S. homes come 2011. We can’t wait what they’ll say next. For now, feel free to give us your take about this development.
