MGS Portable Ops: character profiles
With the game coming out just a few more days from now (December 5th, for those who don’t know), we’re pretty sure you’ve marked that fateful day as Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops day – heck you’ve probably even set your watches and alarm clocks to go off on that marked day.
So to help you out in prepping for the Big Boss, we bring you more details on some of the characters you’ll encounter when you finally get to join Naked Snake as he explores the San Hieronymo Peninsula in this game that’s set six years after MGS3: Snake Eater. But enough with the chit chat, let’s get down to business, shall we?
First up is Gene, the commander who is said to be responsible for the current crisis and situation in the San Hieronymo Peninsula.
Because of this, he’s in danger of being disowned and abandoned by his own country and as a result (and part of his defense mechanism if you ask me), he starts to plan on forming his own nation. The fact that Gene has an up to par military background and strength which he will use to gain his revenge proves that Gene is one fella to definitely look out for.
He’s also a skilled fighter who appears to have connections with a lot of FOX Unit members.
Next up is Python, Snake’s former ally (the two took on a number of missions in Vietnam before), who has decided to go over to the dark side, and will employ all means possible to take Snake out of the picture.
This interesting twist of events shows that his appearance his not the only thing that’s changed (say hello to Spikehead instead). During the course of the mission, the two former friends will inevitably battle it out with each other, with Python proving to Snake that he’s no longer the man he once knew.

Python wears a special cooling suit due to his body’s abnormal thermoregulation caused by a battle wound.
Ursula, along with her twin sister Elza, are probably the only female members of the FOX unit.
But while her sister Elza is the chief of FOX’s medical staff, Ursula is more immersed in the goings on in the group as she plays an essential role in the missions the group takes on. How? She’s the team’s paranormal specialist.
Included in her power arsenal are various ESP abilities, such as clairvoyance and telekinesis. And for the nonbelievers, her powers have proven to be quite useful to the team. She’s also a loyal follower of Gene, and we can only guess whether something fishy’s going on between the two. Hehehe.
Null would be the game’s embodiment of “mysterious yet deadly.”
Very little is known about this character, except that he was trained by the CIA to be the “Perfect Soldier” and is extremely skilled in combat. His main weapon is his katana, which he can also use to deflect bullets.
His ninja-like personality closely resembles that of Gray Fox from the first MGS title, and he goes out to his missions without any hesitation. Interesting character tidbit: When not wielding his katana in the battlefield, he is kept inside a coffin-shaped sensor-deprivation water tank.
Lieutenant Cunningham (formerly known as Boa) is FOX Unit’s interrogation specialist. He’s known for his rough methods for extracting information which Snake is subjected to at the start of Portable Ops.
He’s also a former CIA officer whose weapon is a gatling gun and fights in a hover craft. Cunningham wears an artificial leg as a replacement to the one he lost in battle.
Cunningham is specifically scouting for details on the Philosopher’s Legacy, the secret from Operation Snake Eater.
Roy Cambell. Snake’s cellmate and primary ally. In Portable Ops, he served the Green Berets unit and was sent to the San Hieronymo base before the FOX members came to the peninsula. He was taken captive and met Snake who was kept in the cell next to him.
MGS fanatics would probably recognize Roy Campbell from previous games but in Portable Ops, he’s not the commander in charge of Snake’s activities. This time, he will help out by recruiting soldiers, as well as with radio communication, and other army tasks. David Agranov lends his voice talent to Roy Campbell’s character in the English version of the game.
And of course, lastly, the Big Boss himself, Naked Snake.
If you guys don’t know already, Naked Snake rightly earned the title of Big Boss after the success of Operation Snake Eater.
In Portable Ops however, he’s called back to service with the main objective of stopping Gene and the FOX Unit from holding the world hostage. Needless to say, the FOX Unit is now corrupt and Naked Snake intends to combat this by recruiting new allies and forming a new unit called FOXHOUND. Additional character changes include Naked Snake’s suit which is called the “Close Quarter Combative Enhancer” suit.
It won’t be long guys, four more days and you can finally get in on the action yourself. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is scheduled to land on U.S. shores on December 5, while Japanese players would have to wait til late December to get their hands on the game.
