MGS: Rising is the bridge between MGS 2 and 4
When we met Raiden, he was the young hotshot hero of Metal Gear Solid 2. Last time we saw him, he was the Gecko-slashing menace in Metal Gear Solid 4. Not much is known about what brought about that huge change, and there’s only so much you can learn from the text walls in the Metal Gear Encyclopedia. That’s where Metal Gear Solid: Rising comes in.

According to producer Shigenobu Matsuyama, Metal Gear Solid: Rising will explain how Raiden went from boy-band pop star to the robo-badass that wields swords with his mouth that we know today. Naturally, Konami’s not saying any more than that.
Gameplay-wise, director Mineshi Kimura said that they want Raiden to play as awesome in Rising as he was in the MGS4 trailers. Seeing as those clips were pure genius, it’s a tall order to translate that into a game but an interesting prospect nonetheless. Using his trusty blade, Raiden will slice and gut everything to obtain life, ammo, energy, parts, and sometimes even info.
The primary objective is to allow Raiden to be able to slice anything at any angle, and striking where would determine if you’re looking to injure or kill. They basically want him to “Cut at will”, but the creators aren’t talking about how the controls will go just yet.
If you’re worried about losing the stealth aspect of the Metal Gear franchise, Kimura said that there will still be “stealth elements” in the game. The difference would be that those elements would be based on Raiden’s speed and agility, “so you don’t have to worry about back problems like Snake had in the past.”
