After the launch of the more family-friendly Microsoft Xbox 360 Arcade SKU, Microsoft issued another statement that they are now focusing on making family-oriented games with UK gaming studio Rare in order to further increase Xbox 360 sales.
Alan Bowman of Microsoft Asia-Pacific said that in order for a console to become successful, they must provide more gaming content that would eventually shift their user base from the core gamers to a broader audience from differing age groups. Bowman said that Rare is currently working on games that have “broad appeal”.
However, analysts said that Microsoft’s new stance on adopting the “family fun” image is a challenge directly aimed at Nintendo’s successful Wii, which is currently enjoying a high sales rate with its casual games. The analysts also commented that Microsoft needs a new controller and other unique hardware in order for th next-gen console to be successful in their attempts to become more competitive towards the Wii.
