Microsoft Reveals Their Plan for Origami

Today Microsoft let out of the bag their plan for their anticipated “Origami Project” (aka the UMPC – Ultra Mobile Personal Computer). Essentially it’s a small laptop with a touch screen that’s design as a media device, but actually has a fully working copy of Windows. It’s equipped with wifi, optional GPS and of course speakers with headphone outputs – this is, after all, Microsoft’s attempt at an iPod/DS/PSP killer. Though the device will not be nearly as adept as a stand-alone device, it integrates the gaming abilities of a Nintendo DS (touch screen gaming) and a Sony PSP (wide screen, high resolution gaming) with the media capabilities of an iPod and PMP (through Windows Media Player, WinAmp or whatever your media player of choice is).

The Origami will offer easy synch-up with your home PC, along with the ability to buy new media for download on the go and the ability to run full versions of any Windows XP compatible product. Currently there are 3 models announced – a Celeron M based device from Samsung and ASUS and a Pentium M based device from Founder.

UMPC’s are expected to start becoming available within the next few weeks.
