Microsoft to allow transfer of selected PC content to Xbox 360 through Live
Microsoft seems to be loosening up with their strict and stringent rules with Xbox Live. Though they won’t break the rules, they will bend it a bit to allow transfer of user generated content from the PC to the Xbox 360 for some games.
The catch is that the transfer will run through the publisher’s servers instead of Microsoft’s Xbox Live, thereby making the publishers the accountable party. Publishers will be using the Xbox Live Silver Platform to facilitate the transfer.
The point was clarified during a Q&A session in Gamefest, when it was asked whether a developer could construct a playable level on the PC and transfer it on the 360. Zsolt Mathe, Microsoft Software Design Engineer responded by saying “Even though nobody has done that, I would highly recommend that.”
Although Microsoft will still get to choose which games will be able to make use of the newly relaxed rules, it still presents a lot of opportunities and breathing room for developers, as this will allow for PC generated mods.
Microsoft loosening up on the policies for Xbox Live, though, is made up for with their stringency on which games and content are allowed to use the process. Whether Unreal Tournament III will be able to take advantage of this has not been clarified or even hinted at yet.
