Microsoft Xbox 360 Japan Conference

Realizing that Japan really doesn’t care about the Xbox even with Dead or Alive 4 and Rumble Roses XX, Microsoft held a conference today. A few items of note actually were announced, although it was nothing on the level of an E3-like note. If you’re a fan of any of the following games, however, you’ll be ecstatic. They seem to be all about cult classics!

The conference started out slow, like you’d expect from most conference speeches (Hello Iwata’s Keynotes!).  Xbox’s current situation in Japan was talked about before videos of the season’s upcoming lineup.  A FIFA bundle was announced, although that will not do much against Winning Eleven by Konami. Japan does love its soccer, so we might see. Everyone in attendance also got Xbox 360 soccer balls to take home. Maybe giving stuff away will become a trend?

Microsoft then reported that 520,000 downloads had been made in the Xbox Marketplace. They did not tell us how many of those Japanese users were actually N. American or Europeans faking it, but it shouldn’t be that large a percentage. This means that every Japanese owner has downloaded approximately 5 things from Xbox Live. Hand-in-hand with this announcement came the next big announcement: Namco, Konami, Hudson, SNK, and D3 will be getting their content on board with the Xbox Live Arcade. Pac Man and Galaga included.

Microsoft is going to be collaborating on a Hi-Definition game on Zegapain, a mech Anime. A trailer for the game should be available on Xbox Live now.  They then showed a trailer for Gundam! Right after that, Namco announced Culdcept Saga, which will be online.

This is where it gets big. Sakaguchi (father of Final Fantasy) entered the stage and announced Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey details. Blue Dragon is due out near the end of the year. Lost Odyssey demo will be available in the summer or autumn with the final game being released in 2007. A new trailer was also shown.

Next on the lineup was an answer to their earlier concern with the lack of action-RPGs on the Xbox 360. A new Tri-Ace Action-RPG is being developed for Xbox 360. No movie or title here. Now for the last biggie, Game Arts is producing a sequel to Silpheed.

After this, a new trailer for Ninty-Nine Nights was shown and the conference came to a close.
