Mimibots: Memory Flash Drive Disguised as Objet d’ art

Corrupted_DataHeroMost gadgets are function-driven. Mimibots, on the other hand, are familiar gadgets with artistic twists. These USB flash drives (256MB/$49.95, 512MB/$74.95, 1GB/ $99.95, 2GB/$149.95) are also creative outlets for artists. According to its makers, Mimico, “The mimobot concept is built around the convergence of two very different new mediums, toys as a canvas and flash memory as a digital distribution vehicle. The combined result allows contributing artists to explore the platform in original and different ways, for their enjoyment and yours.”

Earlier this month Mimico released Hero (the blue one) by artist Tado, “a loveable but hapless rogue, desperately trying to make his way in the world as a fortune-hunting swashbuckler! He’ll bring you adventure, magic, riches beyond your wildest dreams, and above all a happy heart. When Hero takes a break from being stupendous, he likes to eat sweet melon buns and do jigsaws.”

Next month the company will unleash Corrupted_Data by artist Jon Burgerman. Corrupted_Data is a “dancing mêlée of all your important ones and zeros, turned to mush by an unexpected surge of electricity. Important financial documents have morphed into showery black clouds, your mp3’s have curled at the edges and gone crispy and all your favourite photos have gone from jpegs to jumping king-bird-fish heads. Cheeky and hungry spores swim through the vast sea of homeless binary searching for new hosts to infect.” It doesn’t exactly inspire product confidence but hey, that’s art for ya.
