Mobiles bumped up with .mobi domains

Dotmobi is the new word for mobile phone companies as a new standard gets on its feet and introduces itself. An open registration process has begun for .mobi (dotmobi) websites, which are used for phone-specific web addresses. 

Governed by the Mobile Top Level Domain organization, more than 13,000 companies have already set up their place on the mobile internet. They expect individuals to pick up their own domains soon, with an ensuing “land rush” for .mobi addresses probably occurring in 2007, when word of this new market reaches everywhere. The sites that will be set up for .mobi addresses will have to follow strict guidelines set by the MTLD, however, before they can see their site on the nets.

The mobile internet itself is a pretty new thing. Only one in ten phone users actually get on the net through their phones due to issues with the reliability and content of mobile internet sites at present. Thus, the .mobi plan is definitely an attempt to make the mobile internet service grow as a place for people to get online without the need for actual computers.
