Modern Warfare 2 good enough to compete with entertainment industry, aims to be biggest-selling game of all time
It’s true that the Call of Duty franchise has quite a huge following – that’s one thing you can’t deny. But how strong is it, really? According to Activision executive Simon Wells, it’s big enough to compete with the big boys outside of the gaming industry – meaning they can compete with other popular franchises in world of movies, TVs, books, music, etc. What’s more is that they’re aiming for Modern Warefare 2 to break records as the best-selling video game of all time! A bold claim and a tall order, perhaps? Not by a long shot!
“GotY? Hell no! We want FotY! That’d be *Franchise* of the Year, baby!”

A bold claim and a tall order, perhaps? Not by a long shot if you’re planning one kick-ass marketing campaign to shake the very foundations of the entertainment industry! Here’s how Wells explains the situation:
Each year the Call of Duty franchise goes from strength-to-strength. We want to propel this year’s title [Modern Warefare 2] to be the biggest selling video game of all time. That may raise some eyebrows, but step back and look at the franchise’s trajectory through preceding launches, and this objective starts to look viable
We firmly believe we have the potential to be the No.1 entertainment property of the year. The reality for a franchise as large as Call of Duty is that we are competing directly with entertainment propositions outside of the video game space.
Activision and Infinity Ward‘s Modern Warfare 2 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC is to be released on November 10, 2009.
