Moon Rock Recipient Neil Armstrong

armstrong rock

On April 18, 2006 Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, was presented with a piece of the moon rock that he brought back on July 20, 1969. It is about a 2 gram piece of medium light gray basalt placed in to clear plastic.

An award created by NASA called the Ambassadors of Exploration honors men and women who have had a hand in the exploration of space. This year commorates the 35th anniversary of the walk on the moon. This year’s ceremony took place at the Cincinnati Museum Center where the award will be on display.

Armstrong accepted the rock with an eloquent speech about how rocks tell us everything, even that we are just here for a few moments in time.
