Moonbooks: Free e-books on your DS

Yeah BABY! BOOKS!Thanks to the hard work of Brandon, Infantile Paralysiser and a lot of dead (or really nice) writers, your DS can now become its very own, fully-functional library. We picked up this little tidbit about a work-in-progress known as the Moonbooks project.

For those who don’t know about it, the wonderful thing about books and published work is that after a certain amount of time, and/or if the author allows it, said works become a matter of public domain. That means you’re free to get the text and copy it, print it on your own paper or whatnot, and get a book completely for free.

For those of us in the techie age, however, what need have we of carrying thousands of pages of thick books wherever we go, when we can access books of our own choosing right on our handheld devices?

That’s exactly what Brandon is doing with the Moonbooks Project. He’s hunted down literary works that are currently in the public domain and has formatted them for viewing on MoonShell. It’s probably going to keep on being updated for a long while, but right now, you can pick up most of the collected works of Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dante Alighieri, and a host of others. To install it, he prompts users to extract the books “to somewhere convenient on whatever ‘card’ you use with the Nintendo DS to run MoonShell.”

On that note, we’d like to request some items for future reading. In addition to grabbing books from the literary greats, maybe you could make one of your future downloads be selected famous speeches and essays, such as Robert Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” and Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream ” speech. In any case, enjoy your free stuff!
