More about PS3-PSP Remote Play from Gamers Day

Casino RoyaleWill you update your FW for PSP-PS3 Remote Play? Are you now more convinced to buy a PS3 because of Remote Play? Earlier, we wrote about the PSP-PS3 “Remote Play” connection that was demonstrated at the Sony Computer Entertainment Gamers Day. Interesting stuff: you can share videos via WiFi from your PS3 and send them over to your PSP. We think this is revolutionary and really adds value to the PSP as a handheld gaming-and-multimedia device.

In our previous article, we said that Kaz Hirai played a trailer of Casino Royale on his PS3 and then on his PSP. But we left out one impressive detail. According to IGN, Kaz paused the playback of Casino Royale on the PS3 and then he switched on his PSP and continued playing the rest of the trailer right there on the handheld (complete with playback controls). The PSP can access the PS3’s XMB menu.

But, while we agree that this means that

  1. you’re no longer limited to the size of your Memory Stick and
  2. you don’t need to recompress any media clips (because now you can play anything that’s in your PS3),

we also want you to realize that at this stage you can only enjoy Remote Play if you’re within WiFi-distance from your PS3. You have to wait for the next step: IP streaming so you can play media from your PS3 on your PSP anywhere you can find a WiFi hotspot in the world!

IGN suspects that the PSP used at the Gamers Day demo may have been using LocationFree from 2.50, but they also wonder if  it was running an update that hasn’t (yet) been released. So, we go back to the questions at the start of this article, will this feature be in an upcoming firmware update? Will this convince you, the PSP homebrew community, to update? And does this further convince you to get a PS3?
