Multi format Blu-ray disks.
One of the biggest advantages of Blu-ray over its competitor HD-DVD is the ability to mix disk formats on the single disk. At the current time HD-DVD cannot do this. The movie publishers are very interested in this technology which allows them to provide multiple platform compatibility with a single disk.
Recently JVC produced disks that used 2 BD layers formatted as a dual layer DVD and a single BD formatted layer. While it does seem that this reduces the content capacity for the Blu-ray portion of the disk, the BD format benefits from the fact each BD layer can hold 25 GB of data. Which is plenty for playback of most high definition movies.
It is reasonable to assume that in the near future more layers would be able to be added, with more content. Blu-ray has the capabilities to reach 8 layer media, and recently TDK announced, at last months CES, their development of a 4 layer 100 GB disk. Looking at what JVC has achieved and combined with more layers there seems to be great potential for multi-format blu-ray disks.
How this all relates to the PS3? Probably not a great deal, since it can read both DVD and BD disks. However it is a boon for people involved in supporting the blu-ray media format, allowing people to purchase single movies which can playback in high definition when they upgrade their dvd player – or buy a PS3?
