Namco Bandai, Sega, and Capcom to shift their focus from the PS3 to the Wii

Namco Bandai, Sega, and Capcom to shift their focus from the PS3 to the Wii - Image 1 The big three game publishers in Japan Namco Bandai, Sega, and Capcom have decided to release more games for the Wii while cutting down their PS3 releases by 30% to 40% according to a Nikkei newspaper survey. Namco Bandai will be increasing its Wii releases by 109% to 115; Sega by 96% to 49; and Capcom by 5% to 20.

The gap between the two game systems may further widen due to this move by the game publishers. As of this article’s writing, it’s estimated that Nintendo titles shipped will total 26.88 million units in fiscal 2007 as compared to the 23.29 million units of games for the PlayStation 3.

The difference has really become pronounced as Capcom alone has decided to boost its Nintendo shipments by a huge 81% to 4.7 million units. Compounding the problem is Square Enix‘s stand not to develop games for the PlayStation 3 until enough units are sold to make the steep development costs financially worthwhile.

To put all of this into perspective, Nintendo’s stock has become very belligerent due to the success of its console and the support of the game publishers. Nintendo’s market value briefly surpassed Sony‘s on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Monday hitting a record Â¥46,350 (US$ 376.80) and effectively raising the company’s market value to US$ 53.4 billion. The question now is what will Sony do to regain their hold on the gaming market that is slowly slipping away from them?
